My experience with herpes has been awful from the beginning.I contracted herpes when I was 17. I got pregnant shortly after and had to have a cesarean because of it. My outbreaks are always very painful. I did manage to find a man who was not put off by the fact that I have herpes and we have been married for 19 years. To my knowledge he does not have it but since most people can have it and have no physical signs maybe he does. He has never been tested. I always feel shameful. Sex is almost non- existent because the fear of passing this on to my partner has kept me bound up. I feel no freedom in sex so it has become mechanical and I think this leads to more outbreaks. I grew up with it being called cold sores, or fever blisters. For years no one seemed concerned about it. Once you have it, it can spread anywhere. I was diagnosed with herpes simplex 2 about 5 years ago. My boyfriend had a cold sore which he told me was a spot that he had picked too much. I suffered with outbreaks constantly and was really depressed. I started on some medication which has really helped and I can increase the dosage if I feel an attack coming. It does mean having regular blood tests but to me it is worth it not to go through the attacks. There has been days where I have been really depressed about it and days where I feel more positive.
