The short answer

A herpes diagnosis often brings the same first question: which type do I have, and what does it mean? Both types are common and manageable. Knowing your type helps you and your doctor understand what to expect and how to protect partners.

Key facts

  • There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2.
  • HSV-1 mostly causes oral herpes (cold sores) but can also cause genital herpes. HSV-2 mainly causes genital herpes.
  • A swab from a fresh sore can show which type you have. A blood test looks for antibodies but cannot tell you when or from whom you got the virus.
  • There is no cure, but medicine can shorten outbreaks and lower the chance of passing herpes on.

When to talk to a doctor

See a doctor or sexual health clinic to confirm a diagnosis and learn which type you have, as this can help predict how often outbreaks may happen. Ask about treatment options and how to protect partners. Tell your provider if you are pregnant.
