Asymptomatic Shedding

Dear Dr. Rob:

I was just diagnosed with genital herpes. It was anal herpes but I never engaged in that type of performance of sex. My question is can herpes be transmitted from a male’s scrotum rubbing against the rectum area, and especially if he is claiming not to be infected? Is it possible he could have worn a condom with another partner and carried the virus on his skin and infected me?

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Who was Just Diagnosed:

There is a phenomenon called “asymptomatic shedding” which means that even without a lesion, the virus can be transmitted. It would seem that this is what happened.
