Chickenpox is not Herpes Simplex 2

Dear Dr. Rob:

Can a false positive Herpes Simplex 2 be caused y having had chickenpox as a child? I have not had any physical symptoms of genital herpes.

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Inquiring About Chickenpox:

No, Herpes Type 2 cannot be caused by having chickenpox as a child.  When chickenpox recurs it is called shingles or Herpes Zoster. Herpes Type 2 is a different lesion although it is similar as a lesion, but it occurs in different places, mostly in the Perineal or vaginal or penile region, with some, about 20%, occurring in the mouth.   I would suggest a Herpes Select Test as a way of determining whether you have Herpes Type 1 or Herpes Type 2, as the lesions can be somewhat nondescript.
