Couple with Genital Herpes
Dear Dr. Rob:
My husband and I both have genital herpes. When we have intercourse he complains about itching, even when I am not having an outbreak and he has no visible lesions or signs of outbreak. He has also experienced some redness. What can we do?

It is possible that using Valtrex as a suppressive regiment will reduce the likelihood of this transmission. You may be experiencing asymptomatic shedding and transmitting the virus back and forth during sexual intercourse. It has been shown that Valcyclovir, 1 gram a day, will reduce shedding by approximately 75%. Of course, you could consider using condoms and practicing safe sex.
