Herpes Select Test

Dear Dr. Rob:

I recently contracted genital herpes. I did not have sex, but close personal contact with someone who, I know now, has the virus. I have small lesions on the tip of my penis. I have read that the first case is the worse and the later cases are much more mild. I want to know if, in the future, will the lesions be on the same place, or will they come back in other places?

Dr Rob’s Response:

Dear Man with a Small Lesion:

I’m not sure that this keynotes herpes. I would wait 2 to 3 months and have the Herpes Select Test. It is possible that it is, but the lesions are nondescript, not characteristic, and may or may not be related to herpes.
In terms of your question relative to the future, I cannot state anything with certainty until I know this is herpes. If it is, it is more than likely that the future lesions will be milder, but there is no guarantee.
