Immunologic Workup

Dear Dr. Rob:

I was wondering what the longest you have heard of a herpes outbreak lasting…I have genital herpes and an outbreak started in August (6 months ago) and hasn’t gone away yet. My doctor has made my dose of Valtrex stronger and I’m going back today to see what’s going on. Is it possible that it could last that long, or may it be something else??

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster with 6 months of Breakouts:

A six month attack of herpes is extremely unusual unless there is an immunologic abnormality underlying it, or in fact, it is something other than herpes. I would visit an Immunologist or your physician and have an immunologic workup as well as further testing to determine if something else may be going on.
