Menses and Herpes

Dear Dr. Rob:

I have had herpes for 15 years now. I still continue to have out breaks every month usually before or after menstruating. Most of what I have read people seldom have monthly outbreaks. Could this be something else?

Concerned

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Concerned:

It is certainly possible you may have something else, but outbreaks that occur every month during your menses are not at all uncommon. If you are having that number of outbreaks, it would be a better recommendation that you go on a suppressive regiment of Valtrex once a day or Valcyclovir once a day and use Lysine, 1 gram twice a day, as a way to calm things down.
