Pains in Groin Area

Dear Dr. Rob:

A month ago I split with my girlfriend who had herpes. She was on medication at the time, had not had an outbreak for a while and we used condoms during sexual intercourse. I have had no symptoms as such (eg itching, red blisters) but this week I have been getting pains around my groin area. I have booked a doctors appointment to have a check up, but could you give me some more advice on the situation? Do you think the pains could be related to herpes? Many thanks.

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Concerned About Pains:

Herpes can present in a plebeian or common way, such that I can say that the pains in your groin are not. If your girlfriend was on medication and you were using condoms, there is very little likelihood that the pain in your groin is related to herpes. On the other hand, I would suggest testing with the Herpes Select Test to make sure.
