Still Use Condoms

Dear Dr. Rob:

I was diagnosed with genital herpes about 4 weeks ago. I had a new sexual partner, and we did not use condoms. He had a blood test that confirmed that he did in fact have herpes, although he has never had any symptoms. Should we use condoms now? Does my risk of an outbreak go up if we continue not to use condoms?

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Who Asks about Condom Use:

You already answered your own question. Probably the risk of infection goes up every time you don’t use a condom because asymptomatic shedding of Herpes Type 1 and Type 2 can occur. I would suggest that even if you have escaped the bullet, you and your partner ought to use condoms, and that if you develop lesions, you still use condoms as well.
