How do I Prevent Herpes Passing to my children?

Dear Dr. Rob:

I have genital herpes. After using the restroom I always wash my
hands in warm water with anti-bacterial soap. Am I doing enough
to prevent passing this on to my children? I wash my hands before
every food preparation and generally 3 to 4 times an hour anyways.
I`m not sure I am being careful enough. Do you have any tips?

Dr Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Who Worries about Transmission to Children:

Herpes is transmitted sexually or through oral means. Washing
your hands is a good idea for all illnesses, but not particularly
necessary for herpes. It sounds like you are being careful
enough that your children will not contact Herpes Type 2,
which is the genital herpes, from any hand contact or even kissing.
