Transmit Herpes Without Symptoms

Dear Dr. Rob:

Can a person who is not a shedder transmit herpes to his or her partner when there are no outbreak or outbreak symptoms?

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Poster Who Inquires about Shedding:

There are no people with herpes who are not shedders. Most shedding occurs during asymptomatic periods, that is to say, periods without lesions. In all people who have been tested with positive herpes during periods of stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition and other factors, shedding occurs.
