Test Results

Dear Dr. Rob:

I have a rash on my penis, and am currently awaiting test results as to whether or not it’s herpes… My wife and I have been absolutely monogamous for our nearly 10 years together, and until now neither of us has had any outbreaks or shown any other symptoms… What are the chances I could possibly be carrying the virus and have shown no symptoms for 10 years??
Thanks

Dr. Rob’s Response:

Dear Monogamous Husband:

It is possible that you have herpes, but a rash or your penis is too indiscriminate or nonspecific for me to state with any certainty.   The results of the test will tell the tale.  It is possible, although unlikely to have had the virus for over 10 years without an outbreak.
